Best Sleeping Positions for a Pain Free Morning | Chiropractor for Sleep in West Omaha, NE

Hello, I’m Dr. Jeremiah Sample from Family First Chiropractic, and today I’d like to share with you some insights on sleep positions that can help you wake up without pain. In the United States alone, over $50 billion is spent annually on sleep aids and remedies, indicating that a good night’s sleep is a significant issue for many.

The Problematic “Captain Morgan” Position

First, let’s address a common but problematic sleeping posture I like to call the “Captain Morgan” position. This involves lying flat on your stomach with the head turned to one side and one leg bent upwards, resembling the stance of the famous rum brand’s mascot. Spending six to seven hours a night in this position puts undue stress on your neck, vertebrae, discs, and, crucially, the nerves exiting your spine.

Ideal Sleeping Positions for Alignment

To avoid such issues, it’s essential to sleep in a way that keeps your neck, head, and back aligned:

  • For Side Sleepers: Choose a pillow that adequately supports your head to keep everything in alignment. Placing a pillow between your legs can also help relieve pressure on the pelvic girdle, promoting better spinal health.
  • For Back Sleepers: Opt for a smaller pillow than you might typically use to avoid pushing your head too far forward, which can strain your cervical and thoracic spine. A pillow that just supports the natural curvature of your neck is ideal. Additionally, placing a pillow under your knees can help alleviate pressure on your lower back, contributing to a more restful and rejuvenating sleep.

Adopting these sleep positions can greatly improve your sleep quality and help you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your day.
