How Family First Chiropractic Eliminates TMJ | Chiropractor for TMJ in West Omaha, NE

Hi, I’m Dr. Joel Marley with Family First Chiropractic and I’m here to share with you how we assess the TMJ joint.

How Is TMJ Pain Affecting Your Life?

So if you’re struggling with TMJ pain, TMJ D, disorder, dysfunction, we’re going to want to first hear about how it’s affecting your life. Is this so much pain in your jaw that you’re missing work? You’re choking down ibuprofen. Is it so much pain in your front of your ear? Is it locking? Is it getting stuck open? Is it getting stuck closed? Does it jog off to one side and stuck to one side or the other? Is it uneven tooth wear? Is it you find yourself grinding which is bruxism? Well, I want to know how it’s affecting your life, then I want to know what could have caused it.

Your TMJ Pain History

So I want to know with a trauma history what you’ve put your body through, was it a blunt force trauma with a motor vehicle accident whipping and lashing your cervical spine and then an airbag in your face? It wasn’t a right hook to the jaw that could have caused a misalignment on the kondiles of this very, very delicate joint. I want to recognize that this ginglymus diarthrodial hinge joint is so densely populated with neurons, that it’s really sensitive. Even a minor disruption in the motion or alignment can cause excruciating pain.

TMJ Pain and Your Cervical Spine

I also want to find out is your neck involved in this. I find frequently that cervical spine can be the cause of symptoms, body signals in the jaw. So we’ll assess and I want to look at your posture. So what is your head position look like over your shoulders? Is it square? Or does it deviate to one side? We know that your cervical spine and your jaw are so intricately connected that as your head moves forward, it changes both the mechanics but also the neurology of what’s happening behind your jaw. Has there been a proper evaluation of an x ray? Most physicians don’t recognize or don’t assess cervical spine and the jaw together.

This is how we get such great results with assessing and correcting the cause of TMJ jaw pain.
