As the Sun Shines, So Should You!

Spring into Health with Sunshine and Outdoor Wellness

Spring is here, and with it comes longer days, blooming flowers, and that glorious sunlight we’ve all been missing during the dark winter months. At Family First Chiropractic, we believe health is more than just a spine in alignment. Everything you do is moving you a step closer to or further away from health. And right now, nature is calling you to step outside and step toward a healthier lifestyle!

Here’s why stepping outside and soaking in the season can be one of the best things you do for your health this spring:

Vitamin D: Your Sunshine Superpower

Did you know that just 10–30 minutes of sunlight a few times a week can significantly boost your vitamin D levels? This essential vitamin supports:

  • Stronger bones—the Vitamin D from sun exposure helps your body absorb calcium better
  • A stronger immune system—increased Vitamin D levels can activate the body’s T-cells, a key component in your immune system
  • Better mood regulation—sunshine stimulates the release of serotonin to naturally enhance your mood
  • Improved sleepsunshine helps to regulate your circadian rhythm

While Vitamin D supplements can help, nothing quite matches the natural, feel-good boost of being out in the sun.

As far as sunscreen goes, don’t feel like you are obligated to slather yourself in sunscreen every time you step outside. Most people can handle spending at least some time in the sun’s rays without sunscreen. If you opt for sunscreen when you’re spending hours outside in the sun, choose a sunscreen that creates a physical barrier (like zinc oxide) that blocks the sun’s rays rather than a chemical-based sunscreen that works by absorbing UV radiation.

Get Moving in the Fresh Air

Fresh spring air and warm sunshine is the perfect motivator to trade the treadmill for a trail or the living room for your local park. Outdoor activity has a variety of benefits:

  • Walking, jogging, or biking outdoors improves cardiovascular health
  • Gentle stretches or yoga on the grass support spinal flexibility and posture
  • Natural terrain can help strengthen smaller stabilizing muscles, which is great for back and joint health

Even a short walk after dinner or a weekend hike with the family can go a long way toward better physical (and emotional) balance. A great rule of thumb is that if your destination is less than a mile away, don’t start your car… take the opportunity to get some steps and some fresh air!

Reconnect Through Nature

Spring isn’t just about blooming flowers, it’s about reconnecting. Spending time outside with friends & family strengthens emotional bonds and reduces feelings of isolation. It’s a natural way to:

  • Unplug from screens and social media
  • Encourage playful, movement-based interactions (especially great for kids!)
  • Create space for conversation, laughter, and relaxation

Whether it’s a backyard BBQ, a picnic in the park, or a morning coffee on the porch—let nature be the backdrop to creating deeper connections with your loved ones.

Dig Into the Garden—and Your Health

Gardening has many benefits besides making your yard look good. Many people use time in the garden to unwind from daily stressors and reduce anxiety. Various gardening activities include opportunities for utilizing both large and fine motor skills. And don’t forget to plant a garden for food, not just flowers! Whether you have a few small pots for growing herbs like parsley, mint, or dill, or you’ve turned your whole backyard into a mini-farm, food usually tastes better if you have a part in growing it (we won’t comment on your cooking skills!).

Plus, being around plants and soil has even been shown to increase serotonin levels—your brain’s natural mood booster!

Let Your Health Bloom This Spring

At Family First Chiropractic, we encourage every family to take advantage of the season and let wellness blossom from the inside out. Regular chiropractic care supports your body’s natural ability to move, heal, and enjoy life—especially when combined with healthy habits outdoors.
